Frau Cecille Bier, of Manor Way, Chesham, had come to England with her husband in 1933 and arrived in
Chesham from London on August 31st, 1939 - the day before war broke out. It is not stated in the report
but the date of 1933 may be significant. Hitler came to power in January of that year and many German
Jews and political opponents of Hitler left soon after. Her husband was interned on the outbreak of
hostilities - an ironic fate which befell many Germans who fled the Nazis to settle in Britain.
Whatever the circumstances of their emigration, Frau Bier made the mistake of possessing a radio -
illegal for enemy citizens. From the Bucks Examiner, November 8th, 1940. Thanks are due to Ian Garland
for researching this article.
