Chesham High School history department is taking part in a government-sponsored initiative to
celebrate this year’s 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The department
is planning to interview as many local residents as possible who have memories of life in
Chesham during the war. These interviews will be conducted by the pupils on video tape and
then made available to local libraries and schools on DVD as a digital archive and local
history resource for further study.
Transcriptions of the interviews and other material will appear on this website dedicated to Chesham in
the Second World War. It’s hoped that once the site is up and running local people, and those who have
moved away, will be able to add further memories and anecdotes from the period.
As the number of those with first-hand experience of the war inevitably declines, it is vital that we
record as much of it as we can for future generations. If you can help with personal memories,
press-cuttings, letters, and photographs of life in Chesham and the local area which we can copy and
then reproduce on the website, please get in touch with:
In the meantime, if you want to read about the only German air raid on Chesham, click on the link 'Enemy Action',
on the left.
