During the course of the war, nearly 80 men of the town lost their lives. Among them was Sergeant LP Barnett, Air Gunner, killed on May 14, 1943. Before he died, he had written a letter to his mother to be opened in the event of his death. His mother, Mrs. J. Barnett of 34 Broad St. passed on the letter to the Examiner.
